BRIDGE
SHORT TERM REQUIREMENTS

TMI HOLDING FACILITY
(Buffer Zone)

THE FIRST STEP IN BUILDING THE
DOVER-CALAIS "BRIDGE" FOCUSES ON:

Adapting and enhancing the current infrastructure of both ports in order to ensure resilience in the short-term.

Enhancing and adapting existing berth infrastructure to meet the changing demands of the ferry operators.

Maximising existing capacity with added flexibility by improving the management of traffic across multiple modes.

Enhancing efficiency to accommodate predicted increases in traffic.

Traffic Management Improvements:
(Port of Dover)

  • Building of a rail motorway terminal in the Port of Calais linking Le Boulou (Perpignan) with Port of Calais.
  • Implementation of a multimodal interface area that allows the efficient transhipment of trailers between rail, road and ferry in the Port.
  • Implementation of an information exchange platform using ICT technology to manage the efficient flow of unaccompanied freight trailers.
  • Creation of a fully integrated European multi-modal chain that links the UK with northern Spain and the Benelux countries
    through Calais.

Multimodal Platform:
(Port of Calais)

  • Facilitating a dedicated ferry terminal.
  • Opportunity to enhance ferry capacity.
  • Developing a unique integrated logistics solution utilising Dover’s strategic location.
  • Enhancing efficiency through utilisation of empty backloads already heading to Calais (and Dunkirk) via ferry from Dover.
  • Protecting long term port capacity for core ferry business.
  • Improving hinterland connectivity.
  • Catalyst for wider regeneration of Dover.

Continuing berth enhancements
(Port of Dover and Port of Calais)
  • 6 major berth enhancements and 2 pier extensions completed.
  • Introducing the latest safety and operational standards.
  • Enhancing reliability and efficiency to give ferry operators the advantage of reducing time in port, supporting published sailing schedules and maximising fuel economies when crossing the Channel.
